VA vs. IPS


LCD screens are a fantastic innovation in the television industry. These screens are slim and come with better picture quality. But do you know there are different types of LCDs based on the panels used? Well, if you don’t, let’s tell you that there are three types of panels or LCD screens.

The panel types are TN, VA, and IPS. However, the most commonly used panels are the VA and IPS panels. If you’re curious to know about these panel types and what differentiates them, read this article in full.

1. VA (Vertical Alignment) panels

VA panels are also known as vertical alignment panels. These panels are better than the primitive TN panels. The VA panels offer a better contrast ratio, which is why manufacturers use VA panels the most. You can find VA panels with a contrast ratio of 3000:1 to 6000:1.

The LCD screens with VA panels have a less wide viewing angle as compared to the IPS panels. The screen brightness may vary according to the angle you’re viewing the screen from. But if you consider the performance, it’s nowhere near the IPS panels.

Another drawback of the VA panel is the response rate. The response rate of VA panels is slower than both TN and IPS panels. Sometimes, VA-based LCDs can cause latency and motion blur. So, if you’re seeking a gaming monitor, a VA panel is not it.

2. IPS (In-Plane Switching)

IPS or the in-plane switching panels are usually considered the best LCD types. IPS panels offer better color accuracy, color reproduction, viewing angles, and overall image quality. The IPS panels are suited for numerous purposes like gaming, graphics design, etc. Also, you can experience a viewing angle of about 178 degrees from these panels.

The above benefits are the reason behind IPS LCDs being so costly. You can find the IPS screens with good response times lying between 4-8ms. However, some fast-paced games might result in motion blur if you choose an IPS LCD with a response time of more than 8ms. So, keep this fact in mind.

S-IPS panels

S-IPS panels are similar to the IPS panels but have a purple hue when viewed from a specific angle. These IPS panels are advanced and carry a premium price tag. There’s yet another type of IPS panel, which is an advanced version of the S-IPS.

It’s known as the H-IPS. These panels come with a separate pixel structure and have a better contrast ratio and picture quality. However, this type of LCD panel has a drawback, which is termed as IPS glow.

There’s a white or yellow tinge that appears on the screen when the room goes dark. This is something the users don’t like.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • It comes with the best picture quality with better contrast, color reproduction, and color accuracy

Cons:

  • It causes backlight bleed
  • These panels are costly
  • The response time is slow

3. Comparison of Two VA vs. IPS 

Viewing angle

It’s the angle at which the users view the screen without noticing a picture quality loss. In VA TVs or panels, you’ll commonly find this problem. You’ll notice a degradation of the image if you view it at a 20-degree angle, which makes it lose in this race to IPS panels.

IPS panels offer a pretty wide viewing angle. You can also find IPS panel LCDs with a 178-degree angle, which is nowhere comparable to the VA panels.

The winner here is the IPS panel.

Contrast

Both VA and IPS screens cannot surpass the contrast offered by OLED TVs, but still, you can find one better than the other. Contrast plays an essential role in determining the picture quality. Low contrast means fader colors.

A dark environment will appear to be darker in VN panels, which offer a rich experience. However, in IPS panels, you’ll find the black environment to be greyed out. This kills the image quality and experience. It’s because of the low contrast that IPS panels offer.

The IPS panels have an average contrast ratio of 1000:1, while the VA panels have a better contrast ratio of 6000:1, which is quite impressive.

The winner here is the VA panel.

Black uniformity

It determines how uniform the black color is on the screen. If you consider IPS panels, the black color appears to be less dark or has less black uniformity. However, VA panels come with a better black uniformity as compared to the IPS panels.

Also, there’s an issue known as IPS glow, which makes it lose to VA panels in this comparison.

The winner here is the VA panel.

Technical Differences

The LCDs contain liquid crystals, which form the pixels. When electricity is passed, these crystals react and change their position. This way, the crystals block less or lighter depending on their location or position.

The IPS panels have horizontally arranged crystals. These crystals rotate when electricity is passed and allow light to pass. However, VA panels have vertically arranged crystals. When electricity is passed, these crystals go to a horizontal position and allow the light to pass.

And when no current passes through these crystals, the VA panels block light better because of the vertical position. This is the reason behind VA panels having better contrast as compared to the IPS panels.

The winner here is the VA panel.

Wide Angle VA

Viewing angle is another important feature that determines the picture quality. Generally, VA panels come with poor viewing angles, which causes degradation of the image when viewed at a certain angle. However, the manufacturers worked on this issue and formulated wide-angle VAs.

These panels are better than the generic VA panels but offer poor quality as compared to IPS panels. It’s because these units have a wide-angle because of low contrast. And this makes it poor in quality as compared to the IPS panels.

The winner here is the IPS panel.

5. Conclusion

Both VA and IPS panels have their own merits and demerits. You can use the IPS panels in a brightly lit room for viewing Sports or TV, generally. You can also use it for general PC usage because of the wider viewing angles.

VA panels, on the other hand, are good for dark rooms, which have a theater-like environment. It is because of the better contrast these panels offer. However, choosing the best depends on what you need it for. So, define your requirement and make the right choice.
